PREHISTORIC TIMES
Ardèche is a region of prehistoric importance. Told by the hundreds of caves, sink holes and prehistoric sites.
# As shown at the excavations carried out on Orgnac III site, the first chapter in human history in Ardèche was begun 350,000 years ago. The ancestor of Neanderthal man, homo erectus, makes tools from flints and learns how to use fire.
Musée Régional de Préhistoire.
# Already living in well organised societies, Neanderthal man was the first to bury his dead. He came to Ardèche 80,000 years ago and lived in caves and shelters in the south-east of the county and in the Rhône valley. He mysteriously disappeared 30,000 years ago and had no descendants.

# Homo sapiens, better known as Cro-Magnon man, conquered the world. This period is one of the richest in the history of mankind. He "invented" art and one of the most amazing expressions of that art can be seen in the 400 paintings in the Chauvet Cave, the oldest known in the world (32,000 years old). You can discover these drawings through beautiful photos and a video made by the three people who discovered the cave in 1994 at the exhibition:
