Romanesque Art in Ardèche
The Romanesque churches and chapels of the Ardèche, constructed from the 10th century, are often little known. Apart from the major edifices such as those in Viviers, Cruas (
), Champagne (
), Bourg St Andéol (
) and Thines.

In the very Middle Ages, during the 11thC., Romanesque art shows an economic and social rebirth throughout Europe. The Romanesque style is developed in Ardèche and reveals a diversification due to artistic influences from Le Puy-en-Velay, Valence or Saint-Gilles-du-Gard.
Since 2008 in Aubenas (
) area, lovers of churches’lives decided to valorise this exceptional heritage. Thus the “churches road along the Ardèche valley” was born, made of 10 bell towers with 9 churches and a chapel.
Sculpted stones in Saint-Julien du Serre (
), sobriety in Balazuc, wide building in Montpezat-sous-Bauzon (
) or a tiny church in Rochecolombe (
), each can offer the visitor its architectural treasures or simply meditation in a place dedicated to prayers.
